Texas State List
Accepted Texas Species
Last Updated: May 1, 2022
The following is the official list of bird species accepted for Texas by the Texas Bird Records Committee (TBRC) of the Texas Ornithological Society. This list totals 660 species as of May 1, 2022 and includes taxonomic and nomenclatural changes outlined in the 62nd supplement ( Auk, Vol. 138, pp. 1-18) to the AOS Check-list of North American Birds. Species shown boldfaced (166) are considered "Review Species" by the TBRC for which documentation for review is requested for any record.
To be considered a fully accepted species on the Texas list at least one of the following is required:
An extant specimen identified by a recognized authority together with convincing evidence that the specimen was obtained within Texas.
One or more photographs that clearly demonstrate definitive characters with convincing evidence that the photos were taken within Texas.
An audio recording of a bird vocalization that clearly demonstrates definitive characters with convincing evidence that the recording was made within Texas.
In addition to the above, the record itself must be reviewed and accepted by the TBRC.
I = Introduced (8)
RI = Reintroduction in progress - not established (2)
E = Extinct (2)
e = extirpated (1)
u = uncertain origin (stable to increasing populations of introduced/native origin) (2)
Presumptive Species List
The following is the official TBRC list of species for which written descriptions of sight records have been accepted by the TBRC but the species has not yet met the requirements for full acceptance on the Texas List (identifiable specimen, photo, video, or audio recording).
We'll keep you informed of all additions to all lists as they become final.
